Shaving a dog down to the skin is an extreme measure that should only be considered if the pet has a coat that can tolerate shaving (as in single layered dogs such as Poodles) and if it is the last option due to medical problems, such as severe tangles.
Dogs that require clipping should be kept to a length consistent with grooming frequency.
Dogs that are brushed often and groomed regularly can be kept longer if desired.
Dogs that are not frequently brushed and do not receive regular grooming should be kept shorter to prevent the coat from tangling and causing pain.
Important: Some breeds, especially those with thick double coats (such as Siberian Huskies), should never be completely clipped because of the damage this can cause to the coat.
Limit trimming to small, detailed areas such as soles of feet and hygienic areas for breeds not suitable for full clipping.
