The equipment you need to trim a pet depends on the type and breed of the animal.
In addition to basic grooming such as clipping nails and cleaning ears and teeth, every pet owner must be familiar with the specific needs of the breed they are working with.
Dogs can usually be classified into four grooming categories:
- Bath and Brush: Wash and brush only.
- Bath, Brush and Light Trim Work: Washing, brushing and light trim work such as touching up certain areas.
- Bath, Brush and Full Cut: Wash, brush and a full cut, where the coat is trimmed or cut everywhere.
- Bath and Brush with possible extras: Washing, brushing and additional grooming treatments, such as touching up specific coat areas or hygienic trims.
For each of these categories, it is helpful to set up a grooming area with, for example, a grooming table, a trimming arm and a loop so that trimming is comfortable for both you and your pet.
Depending on your pet’s coat category, you usually have an appropriate brush, a comb for many breeds, clippers or trimmers for paws and sensitive areas, and various other tools and products appropriate to the coat type.
