When discussing a dog’s cycle of heat (known as menstruation in humans), it is first important to mention that pet owners should have their dogs spayed or neutered, not only because of the long-term health benefits, but also out of compassion for the already overcrowded shelters.
For female dogs (correctly referred to as “bitches”), their cycle begins with swelling of the vulva and is accompanied by bleeding, usually for 9-10 days.
After the flowering cycle, the female dog enters what is commonly referred to as “heat,” when she sends a very clear message to every intact male dog in the neighborhood that she is ready and capable of becoming pregnant.
The “heat” phase can last between 3 and 21 days, with an average cycle of about 9 days.
This cycle usually repeats twice a year, but can vary depending on the dog’s age, breed and size.
It is not recommended to schedule a visit to the groomer during the bleeding or heat cycle, but in the event that it is unavoidable, be sure to notify the groomer in advance.
