How do you shave a dog with clippers?

Clippers are the safest and most effective tools to use when shaving a dog.
Whether you plan to shave a small area, such as the paws or face, or your dog’s entire body, it’s important to know that not every dog is suitable to be clipped.
Read on for more information and tips.

1. Shave small areas

For small areas, such as the legs, face or around the genitals, use clippers with an appropriate blade length.
Here are some guidelines:

  • Genitals and sensitive areas: Use a toning knife with a length of about 1.5 – 2 mm.
  • Foot soles: Use a shorter blade, usually 0.5 – 0.8 mm.

Make sure you are knowledgeable about using clippers to avoid injury to your pet.
Our beginner’s course provides step-by-step instructions for safe and effective use of clippers.

2. Are you considering a full shave?

Before you consider a full shave, determine if this is the right choice for your dog.
For many double-layered breeds, a full shave is not only unnecessary, but can permanently damage the coat.
Double-layered coats serve as natural insulators – both for heat and for cooling and protection from the elements.
Therefore, shearing is usually only appropriate for certain single-layer breeds, such as Poodles.
If you are unsure if your dog is suitable for a full shave, consult a professional groomer.

3. When should you shave?

If you have determined that your dog is a suitable candidate for a full shave, for example because of severe tangles, determine whether to shave the coat before or after bathing:

  • Tight tangles (close to the skin): Shave before bathing.
  • Loose tangles (farther from the skin): Wash and condition the coat first to loosen dirt and tangles, then shave.

Remember, complete shaving to a very short length is often considered a last resort.
If the tangles are not severe, consider using an attachment comb on your clippers for a longer trim, such as a “puppy cut.”
